When director Greg Mottola gives the audience that close-up of the world\u2019s worst fake ID, it is hard not to lose control. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it\u2019s not just the director who deserves the credit, as the prop maker had to put a lot of work into it. One of the more poignant props in movie history, Wilson the Volleyball represents the need for contact and connection, as he (notice I didn\u2019t say \u201cit\u201d) is the only companion the bearded Hanks can find out there on the island. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And not to spoil the ending, but this seemingly simplistic item one can buy at their local sporting goods store ends up being a source of true drama and emotionality in the movie. This Tim Burton classic has an incredibly simple premise (Pee-Wee wants to get his bike back) and yet the cross-country adventure he takes us on is anything but simple; the bike leads Pee-Wee to dangerous situations, crazy characters (\u201cTell \u2018em Large Marge sent ya\u201d), and a variety of wacky locations (yes, even Texas). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pee-Wee\u2019s famous line in the movie was always \u201cI\u2019m a loner, Dottie, a rebel,\u201d but the truth is &#8212; with this film prop &#8212; Pee-Wee was never really alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1054 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/sos-wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/15014714\/Say-Anything-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/sos-wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/15014714\/Say-Anything-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/sos-wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/15014714\/Say-Anything.jpg 650w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Movie Prop #4: The Boombox in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Say Anything&#8230;<\/span><\/i><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The moment when John Cusack\u2019s character goes outside the home of Ione Sky\u2019s character in the middle of the night and holds up this film prop is one of the more parodied moments in movies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 1980s were coming to an end, and there was no better way to mark that ending than by a nostalgic blasting of Peter Gabriel\u2019s \u201cIn Your Eyes\u201d from one of these epic movie props. In this 1941 John Huston noir, film props become film plots, as three unforgettable characters all compete to obtain <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Maltese Falcon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> statue. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a statute of, you guessed it, a falcon but, as you can see, it\u2019s encrusted with jewels and looks pretty incredible on any mantlepiece. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sculptor of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Maltese Falcon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> statue was the esteemed late artist Fred Sexton, who had mastered the art of movie props. He put a lot of effort into all his props, and allegedly, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Maltese Falcon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is cursed. The Box of Chocolates in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forrest Gump<\/span><\/i><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, Tom Hanks movies made this list twice, but \u201cHanks\u201d and \u201cHollywood\u201d are pretty much synonyms at this point, aren\u2019t they? Just be glad we didn\u2019t crowd the list with other Hanks-centric props like the piano in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and his revolver from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saving Private Ryan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The box is used as an explicit metaphor for life, thanks to the titular character\u2019s mother (shoutout to the great Sally Field), and Forrest uses the box as a way to talk to people on the famous bench and tell them\/the audience his story. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While that very bench could arguably make this list, isn\u2019t it better to go with something delicious? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, one has to wonder if this was one of the authentic movie props from the set&#8230;so did Hanks ever get the chance to eat \u2018em? Well, let\u2019s just say in the way <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pee-Wee\u2019s Big Adventure<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was about one man\u2019s hunt for a bike, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citizen Kane<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is about one man\u2019s hunt for a sled &#8212; even though that man doesn\u2019t know it. The sled\u2019s reveal has inspired decades upon decades of films using objects as metaphors in similarly cinematic and climactic ways. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sure, it symbolized his childhood and a deep connection with his lost parents, but that\u2019s all pretty heavy to put on screen. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Welles imbued the sled with so much significance it carried the entire movie.
